What’s On My Bench? An Awesome Edwards Trombone!

There have been lots and lots of horns across my bench lately, but I thought I’d take a few moments to show you this one - an Edwards trombone with Thayer valve and TB-C slide. This is a very nice professional instrument, and the previous owner cared for it as it only had one small dent. It was, however, pretty full of calcification and had a few stuck parts due to not having a regular chem clean. While a regular home clean will take care of a lot of the yuck we blow into our horns, a professional chem clean...

What’s On My Bench? A Jupiter 1110 BBb Tuba!

Hello sports fans! Welcome to everyone’s favorite, Tuba Wrasslin’!!! Before I started school band, I briefly thought about playing tuba. It’s such a cool sound and such a presence in a band, and it was hard to resist, but trumpet was calling me. I’m glad I resisted the temptation, but not because of the size of it. Tubas are expensive!  Your average new student tuba is about the same price as a high end professional trumpet. We all understand that here, and so we carry great tubas from student to pro at great prices. This Jupiter 1110 is a great...

What's on My Bench? A Trio of Vintage Bachs!

There’s been a whole lot happening at the igloo lately, including a giant shipment of B&S, Schertzer, and Meinl Weston brass, but I thought I would take a moment to share these beauties with you! What you see here are a ‘62 Mt Vernon, a ‘66 43, and a ‘70 37, and they are all in pretty fantastic shape! The Mt Vernon is the best player of the three, but probably because it has had a valve job at some point and the pistons are still nice and tight. All three show some wear, but they still have plenty of...

What's on My Bench? 76 Trombones! (ok, only 22)

Life at the igloo has been super busy lately, with lots of new shipments of Bach and Conn brass from Conn-Selmer! Today I’m going through a shipment of 22 trombones. Most of them are Bach 42BO like the one you see here!  This particular horn is like brand new aside from a small dent in the knuckle tubing I have repaired. Most of them are near perfect with tiny cosmetic flaws, and a few show light use. We’ve also gotten a bunch of Bach trumpets in similar condition - as you can see from this photo they have all been...

What’s on My Bench? Conn 62H Trombone

What’s on My Bench? Conn 62H Trombone

Today’s awesome horn is a Conn 62H trombone, and it was a lot of fun to work on! Serial number dates this one at 1970, and it still has a lot of years of play time left in it. This is a very unusual horn in that the main tuning mechanism is in the handslide instead of the bell. It was stuck and had a small dent, so I had some delicate work to do. It came out beautifully with no issues, so the tuning mechanism works smoothly and the handslide does as well. Someone had painted the rotor caps...
