What’s on My Bench? A Modular Edwards Trumpet!

You know what’s fun about modular trumpets? You can fit them in one basket when you take them apart for cleaning! 🤣 Edwards is a division of the Getzen company that’s known for its high-end trumpets and trombones, and offers quite a large variety of options for their instruments. Another fun thing about a modular instrument is that you can have more than one bell or leadpipe to suit your specific needs and change them out easily.  This particular instrument is set up with a very lightweight bell that has had some significant damage in its past followed by some...

What’s on My Bench? A 1957 Holton Bass Trumpet!

Wow, I’ve had some cool stuff lately, and this one was a whole lot of fun! This one has had some work done in the past, but it’s in pretty nice shape overall. It’s mostly raw brass at this point in its life, so I left as much patina as I could. That red brass bell is a beauty! It needed a good solid clean, and new felts and corks, but other than that not much. It had a replacement water key that was a bad fit causing leaks, but I found an age appropriate one that was a better...

What’s on My Bench? A 1948 Bach 42 Trumpet!

Yes, brass fans - you read that correctly - a 42 bell trumpet! You can check out the original specs of the horn on the photo of the shop card, too! This horn is almost all original, with roughly 70% of its lacquer remaining, and has seen very little trauma in its long life. The leadpipe has been replaced with a copper one and the 2nd valve slide pull knob is missing, but it’s nice and straight and shows very little evidence of repair otherwise. It even comes with the original case! Unfortunately we don’t have the original shop card...

What's on My Bench? A Trio of Vintage Bachs!

There’s been a whole lot happening at the igloo lately, including a giant shipment of B&S, Schertzer, and Meinl Weston brass, but I thought I would take a moment to share these beauties with you! What you see here are a ‘62 Mt Vernon, a ‘66 43, and a ‘70 37, and they are all in pretty fantastic shape! The Mt Vernon is the best player of the three, but probably because it has had a valve job at some point and the pistons are still nice and tight. All three show some wear, but they still have plenty of...

What's on My Bench? 3 MLP LA Benge Trumpet

Our horns come from all over, so most of the time I don’t know much about their history. This horn is different, though, as I gig with its previous owner quite regularly! I recently helped him with the purchase of a new Jupiter XO 1600i Ingram model, and he decided he didn’t need to keep this one. Here we have a 3 MLP LA Benge, serial dates it to 1980-81. It doesn’t show a lot of wear for a horn of this age - though it’s been played a lot, it has also been well cared for. All it needed...
