Its fundamental is an octave above that of a full-size CC tuba, while the extensive valve system expands its lower register and provides additional fingering resources. This specialized design is closely associated with the French orchestral tradition and the instrument concept Maurice Ravel had in mind for Bydlo in his orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition.

Wessex French C Tuba Specifications

Instrument Type: French-style C tuba

Key: C

Model: French C Tuba

Finish: Lacquer

Bell Material: Yellow brass

Valve Configuration: Six piston valves

Case: Wessex fitted soft case with backpack straps

Accessories: Wessex FR2 mouthpiece

Serial Number: 0319020

Condition & Setup

This pre-owned tuba is in excellent playing order and has been professionally serviced, set up, and play-tested. Its historical connection to French orchestral writing makes it particularly relevant to musicians studying period-informed approaches to repertoire such as Ravel's orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition. It is a specialized instrument rather than a direct substitute for a full-size CC tuba and will be most meaningful to players who specifically value its register, compact proportions, and six-valve system.

Common Questions About the Wessex French C Tuba

How does a French C tuba differ from a CC tuba?

The French C tuba is built on a smaller, euphonium-like scale, and its fundamental is pitched an octave above the fundamental of a CC tuba. It therefore has a different register, response, tonal profile, and orchestral role from a large modern CC tuba.

Why does this instrument have six valves?

The additional valves extend the instrument's lower register and provide alternate fingering combinations. Experienced players can use those options to manage intonation, response, and technical passages throughout the instrument's expanded range.

Why is the French C tuba associated with Bydlo?

Maurice Ravel had the French C tuba tradition in mind when orchestrating Bydlo from Pictures at an Exhibition. The instrument's euphonium-like scale and extended low register help explain the distinctive character and demands of that orchestral part.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0608/3461/files/Wessex-French-Professional-C-Tuba-in-Lacquer.jpg?v=1792588794
