Buffet Crampon Bb Soprano Clarinet, circa 1920 HISTORIC COLLECTION
Buffet-Crampon Bb Soprano Clarinet, c. 1920
This exquisite Bb soprano clarinet, crafted by the renowned Buffet-Crampon, exemplifies early 20th-century French woodwind craftsmanship. Dating to circa 1920, this clarinet is constructed from the finest grenadilla wood, known for its rich grain and superior durability, which contributed to the instrument's warm tonal qualities. The nickel key mounts reflect the intricate precision of the Boehm system, a hallmark of the period and a significant advancement in clarinet design that allowed for enhanced playability and tuning stability.
This instrument carries the serial number 1035, adding to its traceable legacy. This particular clarinet is noted for once being part of the collection of Henry Baron, an esteemed figure in the clarinet world, adding further collector's interest.
Historical Context
The early 20th century marked a period of significant development and standardization in woodwind instrument design, with Buffet-Crampon at the forefront. This era was crucial in embedding the Boehm system into the clarinet repertoire, making instruments of this vintage highly sought after by collectors, historians, and scholars.
Condition Report
Presently, this clarinet shows signs of wear consistent with its age, such as minor surface scratches on the grenadilla and typical tarnishing on the nickel components. The craftsmanship integrity remains intact, although the instrument is not guaranteed to be playable. It stands as a testament to the historical artistry of early 20th-century woodwinds. This clarinet is is sold as a historical artifact only. It is ideally suited for collectors, researchers, museums, and academic institutions seeking to enrich their collections with a piece of musical history.
As this instrument is historically interesting, we have chosen to not do restoration work on it and leave that to the eventual owner. Instrument will need pad and keywork to be playable.
