F. Lorée R44 System 6 Oboe

This exquisite oboe, crafted by the esteemed French maker Lorée, exemplifies the fine artistry and engineering of early 20th-century woodwind instruments. Originating from France, Lorée has been synonymous with oboe excellence since its founding in 1881 by François Lorée, who was pivotal in modern oboe development. The System 6 featured in this model highlights a set of keywork innovations unique to the period, incorporating advances that catered to the evolving demands of concert performance at the time.

The craftsmanship is evident in the choice of high-quality grenadilla wood combined with intricate silver-plated keywork and silver-inlaid bell that showcases the intricate detailing expected from French design. The oboe demonstrates traditional construction techniques of its era with Conception Grégorienne tuning, a characteristic aspect of Lorée’s legacy in oboe manufacture.

Historical Context and Importance

Lorée's instruments are revered in the oboe community, with their influence extending to both professional performance and academic study. This particular oboe’s Systeme 6 system points to a specific advancement during the early 20th century, highlighting the company's commitment to innovation.

Condition Report

Condition assessment of this instrument notes wear congruent with age, such as minor cosmetic blemishes and patina on metal components. Although not guaranteed to be in playing condition, it remains a significant object of study. Collection and academic interest are paramount as this instrument provides valuable insights into historical oboe construction. This instrument is offered as a historical artifact only and is not guaranteed to be playable. Its value rests in its potential to enrich collections, museums, and research initiatives focusing on wind instrument innovation and heritage. Collectors, historians, and researchers will find this museum-grade artifact an invaluable addition to their study and presentation of historic brass and woodwind instruments.

As this instrument is historically interesting, we have chosen to not do restoration work on it and leave that to the eventual owner. Instrument will need pad and keywork to be playable.
