Metzler Bb Soprano Clarinet, circa 1842-81 HISTORIC COLLECTION
Metzler Bb Soprano Clarinet, c. 1842-81
This exquisite Bb soprano clarinet is attributed to the esteemed maker Metzler, crafted in the mid-19th century. The instrument was produced approximately between 1842 and 1881, during a significant period for woodwind development in London. Meticulously constructed from fine boxwood, this clarinet showcases the exceptional craftsmanship characteristic of Metzler instruments. It features a four-piece body design, which was a popular construction method for enhancing portability and sound quality during that era. The key mounts are made of brass and ivory, materials highly regarded for their durability and aesthetic appeal. Such use of brass and ivory provided excellent action for the keys and added a touch of elegance to the instrument's appearance.
Historical Context
Metzler was a prominent name in the 19th-century musical instrument industry, renowned for producing high-quality woodwinds and brass instruments. Their clarinets were particularly noted for their innovative design features and superior craftsmanship. This clarinet's production aligns with a period of rich musical evolution, contributing to the expanding range of tonal possibilities in orchestras of the time.
Condition Report
This clarinet is maintained in fair historical condition, with the expected patina and wear indicative of its age. The boxwood body shows signs of use typical for an instrument of this period, and there are surface imperfections that add to its historical charm and authenticity. This clarinet is a true artifact, representative of its time and place in musical history. Please note that this instrument is not guaranteed to be playable and is offered strictly as a historical artifact. This clarinet presents a compelling opportunity for collectors, researchers, and academic institutions. Its unique design and historical significance make it an invaluable addition to any museum or personal collection seeking to preserve the legacy of 19th-century woodwind craftsmanship.
As this instrument is historically interesting, we have chosen to not do restoration work on it and leave that to the eventual owner. Instrument will need pad and keywork to be playable.
