Here is an extraordinary Conn 60H 'Preacher's Trombone' in C with factory gold plate and beautiful factory custom engraving of a woman's portrait, and the monogram W.D. Grissom on the bell.

This model was known as a preacher's trombone because it was intended for people who had learned to play Bb trombone in Salvation Army bands reading Bb Treble Clef - playing this instrument in C would allow pastors to read the soprano line of a hymnal on the trombone without difficult transpositions and thereby lead hymns. This model does include a switch to put the instrument into the key of Bb for more standard use, though it plays a little stuffy in that configuration.

My limited research indicates that a W.D. Grissom was a methodist minister in Kentucky and Tennesee in the 1930s and 40s and it is fun to speculate that this might have been the trombone that he led the congregation in hymns with, though I have found no concrete confirmation of this.

For modern use, these instruments are actually quite useful. I have used this very model to play 1st trombone parts for Mozart church music - the tone quality is very similar to the Conn alto trombones of this period and are tonally appropriate for classical music, but the intonation is better than the smaller Eb alto. In addition, the sharp keys that these pieces tend to be written in lie better on a C instrument.

This trombone is in very nice condition. Original gold plate is >90% present and the original custom engraving is gorgeous. Slide is good enough to use, but not perfect - maybe a 7 out of 10. Tone quality is light and clear, and this would be a great horn for early classical work. Or leading church congregations! Either way it is a beautiful addition to any trombonist's collection.
