F. Lorée Oboe XX7 with Boehm Clarinet System HISTORIC COLLECTION
F. Lorée Oboe
This Lorée oboe is an exquisite representation of early 20th-century woodwind craftsmanship, notable for its distinctive implementation of the Boehm clarinet system. Crafted with dedication and expertise, this artifact is from renowned French maker Lorée, identified by the serial number XX7. This piece exemplifies a noteworthy period for oboe development, during which the integration of different key systems was being explored to achieve enhanced playability and musical expression.
Design and Craftsmanship
The oboe's construction is reflective of the era's finest woodwind instruments, consisting of high-quality grenadilla wood, a favored material for its resilience and rich tonal qualities (though playability is not assured). The metal keywork displays the complex mechanics of the Boehm system, traditionally associated with clarinets, which offers insight into the experimental approach of woodwind makers in merging diverse mechanical systems successfully.
Historical Significance
The Lorée oboe is part of an important transitional period in wind instrument development. Lorée, esteemed for innovations in oboe design, leveraged the Boehm system not just as an exercise in versatility but as a bridge to modern applications of woodwind mechanisms. This oboe serves as a critical link in the evolutionary chain of woodwind instruments, making it invaluable for academic and historical study.
Condition Report
The instrument's physical condition is consistent with its age, preserving its structural integrity and authenticity as an early 20th-century creation. While the keywork and body showcase minor wear typical of historical artifacts, it remains a visually compelling piece. However, it is important to note this instrument is not currently playable, and inspection should focus on its historical and educational value. Includes a rare single-reed oboe mouthpiece allowing clarinet players to double on oboe with minimal effort. This Lorée oboe holds significant value to collectors, researchers, historical enthusiasts, and academic institutions. As a testament to instrument innovation and woodworking artistry, it enhances any serious collection or study of the history of woodwind instruments.
As this instrument is historically interesting, we have chosen to not do restoration work on it and leave that to the eventual owner. Instrument will need pad and keywork to be playable.
