S.E. Shires Q30YA Q-Series Tenor Trombone Overview

The S.E. Shires Q30YA is a large bore F-attachment tenor trombone built to deliver the clarity of sound and projection associated with Shires instruments, with an efficient, versatile setup suited to demanding ensemble work. Its QTY 8 1/2-inch two-piece, hand-hammered QI-taper yellow brass bell with soldered bead supports a clear, singing tone, while the .547-inch QW47 handslide provides a broad sound that retains definition and color. An axial-flow valve contributes an open, low-resistance feel in the low register and a consistent tonal profile across the full range. This instrument was purchased directly from the manufacturer and includes a Shires Q Series case, a large shank Laskey 59D mouthpiece, and a care kit.

Who the Q30YA Tenor Trombone Is For

The S.E. Shires Q30YA is a professional large bore Bb/F tenor trombone designed for trombonists who need a clear, projecting sound with a consistent feel across all registers. The QTY hand-hammered yellow brass bell and .547-inch slide combination supports a broad tonal footprint while keeping articulations defined, and the nickel-silver slide crook helps produce crisp, brilliant attacks.

This model is well suited to orchestral, wind ensemble, commercial, and chamber settings where clarity and projection matter, and where an open, low-resistance valve section is important for low-register playing. The included set of three interchangeable leadpipes allows players to fine-tune response and resistance to match their concept and repertoire.

Common Questions About The S.E. Shires Q30YA

Is the S.E. Shires Q30YA suitable for professional use?

Yes. The Q30YA is a large bore Bb/F tenor trombone with a hand-hammered Shires QTY bell and an axial-flow F-attachment, a configuration commonly chosen by professional players for ensemble and solo work requiring clarity, projection, and low-register facility.

What does the axial-flow valve change about how the trombone plays?

The axial-flow valve is designed to feel very open with low resistance, particularly in the low register. It supports smooth airflow through the valve section and helps maintain a broad, consistent tonal character when switching between open and F-attachment positions.

What is included with this trombone?

It includes the S.E. Shires Q Series tenor trombone case, a large shank Laskey 59D mouthpiece, and a care kit. The instrument also comes with three interchangeable yellow brass leadpipes.
