S.E. Shires Q36GA Bass Trombone Overview

The S.E. Shires Q36GA Q-Series is a professional bass trombone built for players who need a broad, centered sound with clear projection and an exceptionally open valve register. Its 9 1/2-inch, two-piece, hand-hammered QII-taper gold brass bell with a soldered bead supports a warm, singing tonal core and a full, deep low register. A .562-inch bore Q62 handslide in standard-weight yellow brass, paired with a nickel-silver handslide crook, balances breadth of sound with clean, articulate response. Independent axial flow valves provide flexible positions and maintain focus and clarity across registers, making this instrument a strong choice for orchestral, wind ensemble, brass band, and commercial bass trombone work.

Who the Q36GA Bass Trombone Is For

The S.E. Shires Q36GA is a professional Bb bass trombone with independent axial flow valves designed for players who need a warm, projecting sound and a highly open-feeling valve register. The gold brass QII-taper bell helps produce a singing tonal character with strong clarity, while the .562-inch Q62 slide supports a broad, full sound that stays focused in large halls and dense ensembles.

This model is well-suited to advanced students, working professionals, and section players who want a versatile bass trombone that can cover orchestral literature, wind ensemble parts, and contemporary or commercial writing without requiring an overly specialized setup. The independent valve system is especially useful for players who want more options for positions, alternates, and intonation management in the low register.

Common Questions About The S.E. Shires Q36GA

What does “Q-Series” mean on a Shires trombone?

Shires Q-Series instruments are built to Shires design standards with Q-Series components and configurations intended to deliver professional-level playability and consistency, including Shires-style tapers, slides, and valve options.

What is the benefit of independent axial flow valves on this bass trombone?

Independent axial flow valves provide a very open-feeling valve register with minimal resistance, and the independent layout expands slide-position options and alternate fingerings compared with dependent systems, which can help with intonation and facility in low passages.

Is this Q36GA suitable for orchestral bass trombone auditions and professional work?

Yes. The .562-inch slide, 9 1/2-inch gold brass bell, and independent axial flow valves match common professional bass trombone requirements for sound breadth, clarity, and low-register capability in orchestral and ensemble settings.
