Holton H181 'Farkas' Double French Horn Overview

A display model purchased directly from the manufacturer; this horn is in superb condition. The Holton H181 'Farkas' Professional Double French Horn is a sought-after instrument in the brass community, especially among orchestral and solo performers.  Known for its excellence in response and superb intonation, this model distinguishes itself with a red brass bell, contributing to a sweet and supple tone ideal for extended orchestral solos. This professional F/Bb double horn features the classic Farkas (Kruspe) wrap, and it delivers a warm tonal core, broad dynamic range, and strong projection that excels in orchestral, chamber, and concert band settings.

Apart from its tonal superiority, the H181 features a meticulously designed .468 bore and large throat bell, offering remarkable projection and ease of breath control. The tapered rotors and bearings ensure smooth playing, catering to both the seasoned orchestra member and the advanced student. This double French horn is perfectly suited for those who demand quality, boasting a clear lacquer finish and coming with the original Holton Farkas Case for secure transportation.

Who the Holton H181 French Horn Is Best For

The Holton H181 French horn is best suited for advanced students, college players, and professional musicians who want a rich, dark, and powerful orchestral sound. The H181 is an ideal step-up instrument for serious hornists preparing for auditions, conservatory study, or demanding performance work, especially those who favor a traditional American sound concept over a brighter, lighter response. While its complexity and price point make it less suitable for beginners, the Holton H181 remains a trusted choice for players seeking expressive depth, stability, and a classic symphonic voice.
