Selmer Woodwinds at The Mighty Quinn Brass and Winds

The story of the Selmer Company dates back to the 1800's with brothers Alexandre and Henri Selmer's graduation from the Conservatoire de Paris. In 1885, Henri began making reeds, mouthpieces, and clarinets in Paris, while Alexandre Selmer moved to the United States, performing as the principal clarinetist for the Boston Symphony. The Selmer clarinets grew quite a following and in 1904 even received a gold medal at the World's Fair in St Louis.

In 1911, Alexandre returned to Paris to assist the family business, leaving his US interests in the hands of George Bundy. Bundy expanded the business to incorporate selling and distributing instruments from other companies such as Vincent Bach, Martin, Ludwig, and Musser. In the late 1920s, Bundy purchased the American business from the Selmer brothers, while maintaining the exclusive distributorship of Henri Selmer Paris products in the US. In 1948, Selmer produced the first successfully molded plastic clarinet called the Bundy Resonite 1400. The clarinet was modeled after the famous Selmer Paris BT clarinet used by notable artists like Benny Goodman. The clarinet established a reputation for affordability and high quality, and by 1978 it sold over one million units.

In 2003, the Selmer Company merged with C.G. Conn to form Conn-Selmer, becoming the largest full-line manufacturer of band and orchestra instruments in the United States, and one of the largest music companies in the world. Today, Conn-Selmer continues to manufacture high-quality band and orchestral instruments.

FAQs

What is Selmer USA?

Selmer USA refers to the American branch of the historic Selmer musical instrument company. Today it operates as part of Conn-Selmer, one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of band and orchestral instruments in the United States.

Is Selmer USA the same as Henri Selmer Paris?

No. Selmer USA and Henri Selmer Paris are separate companies today. Both share historical roots in the Selmer family business, but Henri Selmer Paris focuses primarily on professional saxophones and clarinets made in France, while Selmer USA operates within Conn-Selmer and offers instruments primarily aimed at the student and educational markets.

Who are Selmer USA instruments designed for?

Many Selmer USA instruments are designed for beginning students, advancing players, and school band programs. The company focuses on durable construction, reliable intonation, and affordability—qualities that make their instruments well suited for music education. They also make some entry level professional models.

What instruments does Selmer USA produce?

Selmer USA produces woodwind instruments including flutes, clarinets, & saxophones.

Do Selmer USA instruments hold their value?

Overall, Selmer USA woodwinds generally maintain moderate resale value, especially if they are in good playing condition and from well-known student or intermediate models. They typically do not retain value as strongly as professional instruments from premium makers, but their reliability and recognizable brand help ensure they remain easy to resell in the student instrument market.
