Student & Intermediate Clarinets

Intermediate clarinets are designed for developing musicians who have mastered the fundamentals and are ready for an instrument offering greater tonal richness, improved intonation, and more responsive keywork. While beginner clarinets typically feature durable ABS resin bodies and simplified construction, intermediate models may incorporate grenadilla wood, upgraded bore designs, and more sophisticated mechanisms. These improvements provide advancing players with greater control over articulation, dynamics, and tone color.

Many clarinet students benefit from upgrading after approximately two to four years of playing, although individual progress is more important than the number of years studied. Students who demonstrate consistent embouchure control, good breath support, and developing technical proficiency may find that an intermediate clarinet provides improved responsiveness and a broader range of tonal possibilities. An upgrade is especially worth considering when preparing for advanced school ensembles, regional honor bands, auditions, or more demanding solo repertoire.

Wooden clarinets, particularly those made from grenadilla, are traditionally preferred by many advanced and professional musicians. They are valued for their refined construction and playing characteristics. However, bore design, mouthpiece selection, and instrument quality generally influence the sound more than body material alone. High-quality synthetic clarinets can deliver excellent intonation and response while offering superior resistance to temperature and humidity changes. Wooden clarinets are an excellent choice for many advancing musicians, but they require more careful maintenance.

The best choice depends on the player's skill level, musical ambitions, and budget. Intermediate clarinets offer significant improvements over student instruments and are well suited to developing musicians who need greater tonal flexibility and more refined keywork. However, serious students planning to pursue music in college or professionally may benefit from purchasing a professional clarinet earlier. A well-maintained used professional clarinet can sometimes provide better long-term value than purchasing an intermediate model that will eventually need replacement.

Yes. The B♭ soprano clarinet is the standard instrument recommended for nearly all beginning clarinet students. It is widely used in elementary, middle school, and high school concert bands, and most beginner instructional materials are written specifically for it. B♭ clarinets are also used extensively in orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz, and chamber music. Other clarinet types, including A, E♭, alto, and bass clarinets, are generally introduced as students gain experience or develop specialized musical interests.

A used intermediate or advanced clarinet can be an excellent value, particularly when purchased from a knowledgeable musical instrument retailer. High-quality clarinets from established manufacturers can provide many years of dependable performance with appropriate maintenance. When evaluating a pre-owned clarinet, important considerations include the condition of the body, pads, corks, springs, key mechanism, and any evidence of repaired cracks. The Mighty Quinn Brass and Winds offers pre-owned instruments backed by a two-year in-house warranty on qualifying used and open-box instruments.

Both buying and renting have advantages, depending on the student's commitment and the family's budget. Renting can be a reasonable option for students who are uncertain about continuing with the instrument. However, purchasing a quality student clarinet can be more economical over several years, particularly when considering the resale value of instruments from reputable manufacturers. Buying a used or open-box beginner clarinet from The Mighty Quinn Brass and Winds can provide an affordable alternative to long-term rental payments while allowing the student to own an instrument from the beginning.
